IMO 2020 is setting stage for a perfect storm of litigation: Hill Dickinson

The incoming 0.50% sulphur cap on January 1st 2020 has the potential to present a perfect storm for litigators dealing with disputes between owners, charterers and bunker suppliers in cases of non-compliance, Beth Bradley, a partner at international maritime law firm Hill Dickinson, has warned.

Bradley said that, as the shipping industry prepared for the introduction of the IMO 2020 global sulphur cap — which is being implemented under Annex VI of the MARPOL convention —there were increasing concerns about the practical and contractual challenges presented.
