Onboard Safety Precaution on Tank Cleaning – The Final Stretch for IMO 2020 Sulphur Cap

Dick Farrel Camoying, Technical Manager, Skuld has noted that the shipping industry was now making the final preparation for compliance with the IMO 0.50% sulphur cap.

He said that Skuld would like to advise its members on the risks involved, particularly to the crew onboard who will be cleaning the tanks in preparation for the use of January 2020-complain fuel.

With the 2020 deadline approaching, members were advised to be mindful in preparation for the safety of the crew onboard. Fuel oil tanks were not designed for human intervention for cleaning; there were many compartments and the crew onboard might not be familiar with the design of the fuel tanks. This makes fuel tanks a potential trap.
